This ESP32 shield expansion board turns a 38 pin ESP32 development board into a proper prototyping base. Every GPIO is broken out with its own signal, power and ground header, so sensors and modules connect with a single 3 pin jumper lead instead of a breadboard full of wires. It also gives your ESP32 more ways to be powered, including a DC barrel jack for projects running away from a computer.

Designed for 38 pin ESP32 boards such as our ESP32 38 pin development board, ESP32 DevKitC and NodeMCU-32S. It accepts both the narrow (0.9") and wide (1.0") board widths.

Features

  • Signal, VCC and GND header for every GPIO pin (G V S layout)
  • Power from a DC barrel jack or USB
  • Jumper selects 3.3V or 5V on the per-pin power headers
  • Separate 3.3V, 5V and GND header block, independent of the jumper
  • Dedicated header for UART (TX/RX) and I2C (SDA/SCL on GPIO21/22)
  • Pin labels printed on the board, so no flipping the ESP32 to read the underside
  • Power LED
  • 4 corner mounting holes

Powering the Board

  • DC jack (5.5 x 2.1 mm): accepts 6.5 to 16V, regulated down to 5V on board. Keep it to 12V or less to limit heat in the regulator.
  • USB: 5V passed through a protection diode.
  • 3.3V rail: supplied by the ESP32 board's own regulator, so keep external 3.3V loads to around 250 mA.

Use only one baseboard power input at a time. You can still plug USB into the ESP32 itself for programming and serial monitoring while the baseboard is powered.

Voltage Jumper

The jumper sets the VCC pin on every G V S header to 3.3V or 5V. Leave it on 3.3V unless your modules specifically need 5V, as ESP32 GPIO pins are not 5V tolerant.
