RS485 Breakout Board for Seeed Studio XIAO is an expansion board that converts UART serial signals to RS-485 for any XIAO development board. Built around the TP8485E half-duplex transceiver, it's designed for robust data transmission over long distances and in high-noise environments, making it a solid choice for industrial control systems and IoT deployments.
What Is RS-485?
RS-485 is a serial communication standard built for long-distance and multipoint connectivity, valued for its strong noise immunity and flexibility across industrial and communication applications.
How Does RS-485 Work?
RS-485 uses a pair of signal lines, A and B, to transmit data, giving it strong noise immunity and support for half-duplex communication. Up to 32 devices can share the same bus, each with its own address for sending and receiving data, and when paired with the Modbus protocol, it enables efficient data exchange between devices in industrial automation and remote monitoring setups.
Long-Distance, Reliable Communication
The onboard TP8485E transceiver enables communication over distances of up to 1200 meters, well beyond what standard UART can reach directly, making this board a practical way to bring long-distance connectivity to a XIAO-based project without redesigning the communication layer.
Wide Voltage Input and Simple Wiring
The board accepts either 5V or 12V power, with two 3-pin terminals, one for signal wires and one for power, keeping wiring straightforward for both bench testing and permanent installations.
Compact Design
At roughly the size of two XIAO boards side by side, it stays compact enough for space-conscious projects while still fitting terminal blocks for reliable field wiring.
Note that this board isn't directly compatible with the XIAO nRF54L15 series, since Arduino isn't currently supported on that board. The hardware interface itself is fully compatible, so developers can manually adapt the software if needed, and official software support from Seeed Studio is in development.
