The HC-SR04 Ultrasonic Distance Measuring Sensor is a versatile component commonly used in Arduino and other microcontroller projects. It uses sonar to determine the distance to an object. It reads distances from 2cm to 400cm (approximately 0.8 inches to 157 inches) with an impressive accuracy of 0.3cm (0.1 inches). This level of precision makes it suitable for most hobbyist projects.

Key Features:

  • Power Supply: +5V DC
  • Quiescent Current: <2mA
  • Working Current: 15mA
  • Effectual Angle: <15°
  • Ranging Distance: 2cm – 400cm (1" – 13ft)
  • Resolution: 0.3 cm
  • Measuring Angle: 30 degrees
  • Trigger Input Pulse Width: 10μs TTL pulse
  • Echo Output Signal: TTL pulse proportional to the distance range
  • Dimensions: 45mm x 20mm x 15mm

How It Works:

  1. The ultrasound transmitter (trigger pin) emits a high-frequency sound (40 kHz).
  2. The sound travels through the air.
  3. If it encounters an object, it bounces back to the module.
  4. The ultrasound receiver (echo pin) detects the reflected sound.
  5. The time between transmission and reception allows us to calculate the distance using the formula:
    • Distance to an object = ((speed of sound in the air) * time) / 2
    • Speed of sound in the air at 20°C (68°F) ≈ 343 m/s

Pinout:

  • VCC: Powers the sensor (5V)
  • Trig: Trigger input pin
  • Echo: Echo output pin
  • GND: Common ground

The HC-SR04 is widely used by Arduino enthusiasts for various applications. If you’re working on a project, consider integrating this reliable sensor!
